Easter 6

O God, you have prepared for those who love you such good things as surpass our understanding: Pour into our hearts such love towards you, that we, loving you in all things and above all things, may obtain your promises, which exceed all that we can desire; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen.

For the beauty of the earth,
for the beauty of the skies,
for the love which from our birth
over and around us lies,
Refrain:
Christ our God, to thee we raise
this our sacrifice of praise.

For the beauty of each hour
of the day and of the night,
hill and vale, and tree and flower,
sun and moon, and stars of light, Refrain

For the joy of ear and eye,
for the heart and brain's delight,
for the mystic harmony
linking sense to sound and sight, Refrain

For the joy of human love,
brother, sister, parent, child,
friends on earth, and friends above,
for all gentle thoughts and mild, Refrain

For each perfect gift of thine
to our race so freely given,
graces human and divine,
flowers of earth and buds of heaven, Refrain

For thy Bride that evermore
lifteth holy hands above,
offering up on every shore
this pure sacrifice of love, Refrain

For the martyrs' crown of light,
for thy prophets' eagle eye,
for thy bold confessors' might,
for the lips of infancy, Refrain

For thy virgins' robes of snow,
for thy maiden Mother mild,
for thyself, with hearts aglow,
Jesus,Victim undefiled, Refrain

A wonderful hymn, when it's in its original version (as you posted it). It has been mangled so much in so many evangelical hymnals, few would be able to recognize that it is a paraphrase of the Eucharistic Prayer. (Of course, having the original refrain as you have posted it makes it even easier to see that.)

What a great hymn. And today's collect (the "such great things" collect) is one of my very favorites.

Of course I meant "such good things," but it's such a great prayer, I typed "great things." :-)

This version is how it is printed in the 1982 Hymnal--what we use @ Grace.

One of the few really good American hymnals. Rejoice in the Lord (from the Reformed Church in America) is another one.
